Aikido for adults
Our adult classes focus on proper technique and mental focus as well as overall fitness and flexibility. Calgary Aikikai welcomes persons of any age, gender or ability. New students may come and watch any class, and may also participate in up to four classes free of charge to see how they like it.
Calgary Aikikai
Since 1980, Calgary Aikikai has trained hundreds of students in this martial art that is both a practical self-defence and form of creative movement. We believe that the best way to learn is through enjoyable and spirited practice, with an emphasis on traditional techniques.
Hello Parents! It’s been too long but our aikido programme for children is starting up again! We are planning a small session for the months of April to June. This three month session will once again be headed up by our team of black belt instructors and will continue to run in the same format and times as before. We are hoping that this interests you and your kids and hope that you have been safe and healthy over the last two years.
Come and try the amazing martial art of Aikido! In these women-only nine hours of introduction, you will learn how to move your body in a way that emphasises self-defence by blending with an attacker’s motion, resolving aggression in a way that creates harmony. Aikido, the “Art of Peace,” is non-competitive and welcomes all who are interested.
We have exciting news for those interested in our adults’ class! We will be starting aikido classes at the dojo on Saturday, September 11th at 10am! We are approaching this opening with caution as the health crisis still remains a serious consideration with the more contagious delta variant. To this end we have some temporary rules that we want to follow to make training at the dojo once again possible and safe for all involved. These are in addition to any advisories or health directives from Alberta Health:
All members must have received their second dose of an AHS-approved COVID-19 vaccine at least two weeks before coming to the dojo
If you feel at all under the weather or are experiencing any of the symptoms of COVID-19, do not come to the dojo (AHS list of symptoms).
As per AHS, if you have symptoms but have not tested for COVID-19, you must self-isolate for 10 days after the start of the symptoms or until the symptoms disappear, whichever is longer
If you are a close contact of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, do not come to the dojo for at least two weeks, or after a negative test result
People training in our adults’ class are free to train in whatever manner suits their comfort levels. Masks are optional and you may switch partners or stay with a single partner for the entire class. Our decision to make vaccination a requirement will remain in effect until our administration decides that the safety risk has reduced enough to drop this requirement.
Unfortunately we will not be able to run our children’s programme this fall but we are optimistic for January 2022. This was not an easy decision to make as we view this programme an essential aspect of our aikido community. We thank all the parents that continue to support us and ask that they bear with us for a little while longer.
