Aikido is a non-competitive Japanese martial art focused on blending, balance, and calm, practical movement. Calgary Aikikai is a welcoming community for kids, adults, and complete beginners.
Not sure where to start? Choose a program below, then register or contact us with any questions. You can also come down to the dojo during a class time and try up to four classes free of charge. Beginners are always welcome to start this way.
Beginners Program
New to Aikido? This is the easiest way to start. You’ll learn the foundations safely and confidently, with clear guidance on movement, technique, and how to train well with partners.
What you’ll learn
- Dojo etiquette, greetings, and how class works
- Essential body movement (tai sabaki) and footwork
- Core Aikido techniques: joint locks, immobilizations, and throws
- Ukemi: falling and rolling skills to prevent injury
- Defence against common grips and strikes, with partner practice

Adult Aikido
