Calgary Aikikai, an aikido community

To celebrate the late Inaba Sensei’s close friendships and life-long commitment to teaching aikido. Calgary Aikikai is honoured to bring together some of the world’s foremost instructors in aikido including three of O’Sensei’s remaining uchi-deshi. This weekend seminar is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Please join us as we celebrate 30 years of aikido.

Y. Kobayashi Sensei, 8th dan

Kobayashi Sensei

Kobayashi Sensei was born in 1936 and founded the Meiji Aikido University Club while a junior at university. He later entered Hombu Dojo in April of 1955 where he trained as an uchi-deshi under founder Morihei Ueshiba Sensei and second Doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba Sensei. He was Shihan and taught extensively at Hombu dojo for many years. In 1969 Kobayashi Sensei opened Aikido Kobayashi Dojo in Kodaira city in Tokyo. At present there are about 120 affiliated and directly controlled dojos in the Aikido Kobayashi Dojo organization where Kobayashi Sensei spends his time teaching in Japan, Europe, North and South America and Asia.

K. Asai Sensei, 8th dan

Asai Sensei

Born in Tokyo in 1942 Asai Sensei began aikido at the age of thirteen and trained as uchi-deshi under Founder Morihei Ueshiba Sensei and second Doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba Sensei. In 1965 he was dispatched by Hombu to Germany to teach aikido where he founded the Aikikai Deutschland in 1967 and opened his first dojo in Düsseldorf in 1972. Asai Sensei continues to serve as the Technical Director for the Aikikai Deutschland and is a Senior Council Member of International Aikido Federation.

T. Arai Sensei, 7th dan

Arai Sensei

Born in 1936, Arai Sensei entered into Hombu Dojo in 1955 and trained as an uchi-deshi under Founder Morihei Ueshiba Sensei and second Doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba Sensei. In 1973, he opened Aikido Yamatoku Dojo at Takasaki City in Gunma Ken, Japan. Teaching Aikido mainly in Gunma Ken he also teaches energetically in Japan and another countries as a president of Aikido Association in Gunma Ken.

R. Kubo Sensei, 7th dan

Kubo Sensei

Born in Hawaii in 1935, Kubo Sensei began his martial arts training in Judo at the age of 12 under the supervision of Yukiso Yamamoto Sensei who later also became Kubo Sensei’s aikido instructor. Influenced by O Sensei Morihei Ueshiba, second Doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba Sensei, Koichi Tohei Sensei, Shoji Nishio Sensei, Morihiro Saito Sensei and Yasuo Kobayashi Sensei. Kubo Sensei opened the Kailua Aikido Club in 1963 where he has been teaching aikido for the last 47 years. As Chief Instructor of Aikido Hawaii International he supervises dojos in Hawaii, Baltimore, Maryland, Nebraska and California.

K. Igarashi Sensei, 7th dan

Igarashi Sensei

Born in 1946, Igarashi Sensei began aikido in 1964 at the Meiji University Aikido Club under the instruction of Kobayashi Sensei. In 1973 he became one of the leading uchi-deshi at Kobayashi Dojos serving as a teaching assistant. In 1983 he established Aikido Igarashi Dojos in the Tokyo Kanagawa area where he regularly teaches at his own dojos as well as overseas in Europe, USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Taiwan and Korea.

K. Shirakawa Sensei, 7th dan

Shirakawa Sensei

Shirakawa Sensei was born in 1947 and started aikido at Meiji University Aikido Club in 1966 under Kobayashi Sensei. In 2000 he opened Aikido Shinburenseijuku in Sendai, Miyagi-ken. At present he oversees and runs 10 dojos and teaches aikido in Japan and overseas.

H. Kobayashi Sensei, 6th dan

Kubo Sensei

As the first member of Kobayashi Dojos, Hiroaki Kobayashi Sensei started aikido at the age of three. After his formal schooling Kobayashi Sensei instructed aikido overseas for several years in Indonesia and Poland before returning to Japan. Currently Fuku-Dojocho (Vice President) of Aikido Kobayashi Dojo where he governs the instructors section of the organization. Fluent in Chinese, Indonesian, and English Kobayashi Sensei continues to teach internationally for a couple months of the year.

30th Anniversary Banquet

Kampai! Saturday evening guests are invited to attend the banquet portion of our anniversary celebration where we will celebrate the life and achievments of Inaba Sensei, his passion for aikido and his legacy Calgary Aikikai.

Scheduled to be held at the Sheraton Cavalier Calgary Hotel in NE Calgary. Costs for this event will be 50 dollars per person.

Calgary Accommodations

This hotel is situated on the Calgary Transit light rail transit (LRT) line and is one stop away from the location of the seminar and minutes to downtown Calgary. Many of the visiting senseis will also be staying here.

There is also the option of campus housing at SAIT (the location of the seminar) which can be shared with others and has the added bonus of a full kitchen. Rates for these newly built rooms range from 100 to 200 dollars for 1 to 4 bedroom units and can accommodate up to eight people. These rooms are within walking distance to the event, transit and shopping.
